A tasty Malaysian affair at EWI event in Melbourne
PETALING JAYA: Wherever they may be, Malaysians and their love of local cuisine are inextricably bound.
This was abundantly clear when Eco World International Berhad (EWI) held the #AnakAnakMalaysia “Taste of Malaysia” event in Melbourne to unite Malaysians in celebration of the upcoming National Day and Malaysia Day.
Over 1,500 people filled out the site of EWI’s upcoming Yarra One development in South Yarra, Melbourne, on Saturday to savour Malaysian delights such as satay, roti jala, roti canai, nasi lemak, char kuey teow, mamak mee goreng and banana leaf rice, served by specially curated vendors.
On hand to spice up the occasion was the latest champ of MasterChef Australia, Diana Chan. The 29-year-old Malaysian accountant based in Melbourne mesmerised the crowd with a special live cooking demonstration and dished up her take on nasi ulam and jiu hoo char (the nyonya favourite of stir-fried turnip with dried cuttlefish).
EWI International Business (Australia) chief executive officer Yap Foo Leong said the team was proud to bring the #AnakAnakMalaysia campaign to Melbourne and promote Malaysian cuisine there.
“With a wide selection of Malaysian food stalls and entertainment, the #AnakAnakMalaysia ‘ Taste of Malaysia’ is truly a great get-together for all Malaysians in Melbourne,” he said in a press release yesterday.
Besides singing performances by Malaysian students, there were two quintessentially Malaysian competitions – the “longest teh tarik pull” and “fastest ais krim potong eater”.
The #AnakAnakMalaysia effort is organised by Star Media Group in collaboration with Eco World Development Group Bhd.
Throughout the campaign, Malaysians from all over the world are encouraged to express their patriotism in a creative manner and share photos and videos of themselves posing with the #AnakAnakMalaysia wristband and Malaysian flag on social media platforms.
