Implement new economic policies for national unity

- KHOO KOK HEONG Pulau Pinang

I AM of the same mind as Tan Sri Ramon Navaratnam on the topic “Walk the talk for national unity” (The Star, Aug 25). Let us be truthful and not hypocritical. Let us be sincere and more open.

We have only been paying lip service to national unity and never treated it with respect and commitment. After 60 years of independence, we are still chasing this elusive dream of national unity.

Leaders have come and gone but not much has been achieved in the area of national unity. As long as every citizen in this beloved country is not treated fairly, national unity and patriotism will never be achieved.

It is an opportune time now to implement the New Economic Model. Going forward, those smart Malays who have excelled and benefitted would not want to be stimagtised as the product of a handicapped policy. They want to show that they are as good as any of their fellow Malaysians.

“Anak Malaysia” is a good political slogan. It would be better if every citizen could feel and see that they are really treated fairly as true Anak Malaysia. Then national unity would be like water; it would find its own level.

No nation can be great if there is lack of patriotism. The government of the day must come out with more proactive policies to promote greater patriotism among our people of all races and religions.
