Julian wins gold as teammate Kai Xiang takes the bronze

JULIAN Yee put on a dazzling display to win the men’s individual figure skating gold at the Kuala Lumpur SEA Games.

The winter sport event is making its debut in the SEA Games.

And the 20-year-old Julian shone in the free skate programme to finish with a total of 205.43 points at the Empire City Ice Arena in Damansara Perdana yesterday.

It was the icing on the cake for Julian, who was already leading the scoring chart after topping the short programme with a score of 73.03 points on Saturday.

Filipino Michael Martinez, who competed at the 2014 Winter Olympics, fell just short and had to settle for the silver.

The 20-year-old Filipino, who took a tumble during the short programme, amassed 116.89 points in the free skate but it only gave him a 171.63 total. There was double delight for the Malaysian camp when 18-year-old Chew Kai Xiang claimed the bronze.

Kai Xiang, who was fourth aftera the short programme, scoredsco 97.81 points in the free skate for a 145.52 total. Singapore, powered by Chinaborn Yu Shuran, romped to a 1-2 finish in the women’s event. The 17-year-old Shuran, who competed at the World Cham- pionships this year, scored 135.52 points while compatriot Chloe Ing (128.61 points) took the silver.

Filipina Alisson Perticheto (113.40 points) settled for the bronze.

Both Malaysian skaters – Aneeta Lingam and Aina Sorfina Mohd Aminuddin – were simply out of their depth.

Aneeta (82.66 points) finished fifth and Aina (69.30 points) ninth.
