Malaysia takes lead in World #QuranHour campaign
GOMBAK: Malaysia will lead in the World #QuranHour campaign at International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) here tomorrow.
The campaign, to be held concurrently nationwide and in some 50 other countries, is aimed at encouraging reading, understanding and practising the Quran, said World #QuranHour secretariat official Siti Aisyah Ibrahim.
“Participants in IIUM will recite the Quran en masse for an hour from 11am.
“After that, it will be continued by Indonesia followed by the other countries,” she said in an interview yesterday.
The countries taking part this year include South Korea, Maldives, Australia, India and Turkey.
IIUM is organising the World #QuranHour campaign for the second time this year and like its last campaign, a full house is expected with over 3,000 participants packing Masjid Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah.
“However, this year’s campaign will differ slightly from last year as we are also adding the recitation of Surah Yasin and the explanation on its teachings,” she said.
Siti Aisyah said this year’s campaign focused on guiding people to understand the Quran and to foster compassionate living.
“We hope that this initiative will bring people together,” she added.
Siti Aisyah said IIUM could hold the campaign on a global level because of its international students and also alumni from over 100 countries.
This year’s #QuranHour is held on the 9th day of Zulhijjah in the Islamic calendar. It is in conjunction with Wukuf Day in Arafah, Mecca which incidentally falls on the same day as National Day.
The national level campaign, Merdeka #QuranHour, which is part of the bigger World #QuranHour campaign, will be held at 8.30pm at Dataran Merdeka on the same day.
