Employers could also help to register eligible voters
THE fact that 3.7 million Malaysians who are eligible to vote at the next general election haven’t registered as voters yet is a critical issue. We have to think of a mechanism to get them to register.
As a young professional in a government-linked corporation, I believe the registration of new voters could be conducted by employers, especially GLCs and government agencies.
Employees aged 21 and above should be alerted to register their names as voters through notices or memos. Every head of department should also remind their subordinates to check their voter status via the Election Commission (EC) website.
The idea of implementing the registration of voters through HR departments of GLCs and government agencies should be welcomed as it would provide a convenient means for employees to register as voters.
The initiative would be brilliantly adopted if the online staff portal provides links to the registration of voters in the EC website. Every time an employee logs into his or her portal, he or she would see the reminder “Please register as a voter; Malaysia’s future is in our hands”.
There are many professionals who deny their significance as voters. They too must be encouraged to register. So, to every Malaysian who is eligible to vote but hasn’t registered yet, get up, get registered and cast your vote.
