National sailors exceed their target with six golds

THE national sailing team were all smiles as they raked in three more golds on the last day of competitio­n to exceed their five-gold target.

The three golds came from the Optimist for boys and girls and the men’s Laser Radial, taking Malaysia’s total haul to six golds, four silvers and three bronzes in 14 events at the National Sailing Complex in Langkawi.

Malaysia’s had earlier won the Optimist mixed team, men’s Internatio­nal 470 and Internatio­nal 420.

Yesterday, Muhammad Fauzi Kaman Shah defeated five other sailors for the boys’ Optimist gold. Panwa Boonnak of Thailand took the silver and Singaporea­n Max Victor Teo Li Chen settled for the bronze.

Nurul Shazwanie Mohd Saad was the winner of the girls’ Optimist. Thai Palika Poonpat bagged the silver and Koh Radiance of Singapore the bronze.

In the men’s Laser Radial, Ahmad Latif Khan Ali Sabri Khan bagged the gold while the silver went to Bernie Chin Cheok Khoon of Singapore. Thailand’s Apiwat Sringam picked up the bronze.

There was heartache for Rio Olympian Nur Shazrin Mohamed Latif as she finished with a silver in the women’s Laser Radial. Singaporea­n Jillian Lee Sook Ying bagge the gold while Thai Kanapan Pachatikap­anya took the bronze.

In the men’s Laser Standard, Khairulniz­am Mohd Affendy claimed the bronze. Ryan Lo Jun Han of Singapore clinched the gold and Thai Keerati Bualong finished second.
