V Shem-Wee Kiong’s future to be decided today

-

TODAY is D-Day for doubles shuttlers Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong.

The Rio Olympic Games silver medallists’ future as a pair will be decided after a meeting between Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) technical director Morten Frost and men’s doubles head coach Cheah Soon Kit.

World No. 5 Wee Kiong-V Shem had a poor outing recently as they lost their second-round match in the World Championships in Glasgow, Scotland, last week.

The duo, who received a firstround bye, went down 18-21, 16-21 to scratch pair Chung Eeu-seok-Kim Duk-young of South Korea.

Frost said that he had submitted a report on V Shem-Wee Kiong’s performances as well as a proposal on their future to BAM president Datuk Seri Norza Zakaria.

“He has accepted the proposal. Soon Kit and I will meet V Shem and Wee Kiong tomorrow (today) to discuss their future,” said Frost.

“One option is to split them up, but we have to hear what they’ve got to say.

“We have to move forward. It’s an important meeting and let’s see what they’ve got to say.”

Frost, though, was happy with the achievement of the SEA Games shuttlers.

“We set an ambitious target of two golds a year ago when we weren’t even sure of our opponents at the Games.

“Despite a strong field, our shuttlers came through nicely to win one gold, four silvers and two bronzes,” he said.

“There are areas that we need to work on but I believe the women shuttlers, especially, rose to the occasion.”
