Mystery man gifts camel

It was a day of moderation as Muslims from all over the country marked the Hari Raya Haji festivity with prayers, sacrifice and humility.

GEORGE TOWN: Muslims who gathered for Penang’s annual sharing of sacrificial meat to mark Hari Raya Haji were amazed by the gift of a camel for sacrifice.

An anonymous donor offered the camel at the State Mosque in Jalan Masjid Negeri yesterday.

While cows and goats are the usual livestock slaughtered so that no one is left without a chance to partake in sacrificial meals during the festivities, the gift of camel meat at mosques around the world is seen as a sign of the benevolence and abundance of the local community.

The State Mosque also had 14 cows offered for sacrifice.

Eighteen cows and 13 goats were slaughtered at Al-Malik Khalid Mosque in Universiti Sains Malaysia.

In Alor Setar, 13 cows weighing a total of 3,250kg were slaughtered at Al-Ihsan Mosque.

Assistant Imam Muhammad Annaz Aziz said the cows were offered by 91 contributors who pooled RM54,600 for the sacrifice.

“Each contributor will take home 4kg of the beef while the rest will be donated to about 1,000 needy people, who will get 600g each,” he said.

In Kuala Lumpur, more than 12,000 worshippers, including Muslim foreigners, filled Masjid Negara for Hari Raya Haji prayers, Bernama reported.

Grand Imam Tan Sri Syaikh Ismail Muhammad in his sermon titled “Ibrah dari Sirah” urged Muslims to emulate the trust and obedience shown by Prophet Ibrahim when he sincerely and fully yielded to Allah’s demand.

In Putrajaya, 135 cattle were slaughtered in conjunction with Hari Raya Haji and Family Day for the constituency.

Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor, who is also Putrajaya MP, and his wife Datin Seri Anggraini Sentiyaki joined residents at the gotong-royong to slaughter the animals.

In Melaka, Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Mohd Khalil Yaakob and Chief Minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron joined about 10,000 worshippers for prayers at Masjid Al-Azim in Bukit Palah. The prayers were led by the Grand Imam, Datuk Mohammad Hashim, who delivered the sermon.
