Ensuring students don’t get ‘too close’

Klang school installs 20 new CCTVs to prevent immoral behaviour

KLANG: A secondary school here will have 20 new surveillance cameras installed in secluded areas to prevent students from getting “too close” to each other.

A parent who only wanted to be known as Mr Tan told The Star the high resolution closed-circuit television cameras (CCTVs) would be installed by the end of the month, to complement several existing cameras at the school’s entrances.

With the addition of a new build- ing recently, he said, there were more blind spots between the old and new blocks.

“The students are young, their hormones are raging but they must also respect their boundaries and not get involved in any immoral behaviour,” he said.

Tan added the additional cameras was also to ensure safety.

A school staff who insisted anonymity said the decision to install the CCTVs was made following a few cases of students loitering, hugging and in close proximity at secluded areas in the school.

“This can lead to more serious problems and the school viewed the matter very seriously.

“The CCTV will be a good reminder for students to behave because they are being watched,” she said.

She added no CCTVs would be installed inside classrooms.

Another parent, KC Lim, 49, whose 16-year-old son was studying at the school, said he was not told about the new CCTVs but wel- comed the move.

“It is better to do something to prevent any bad situation from happening,” he added.

When contacted, Deputy Education Minister Datuk Chong Sin Woon said the school’s initiative to address the issue was laudable.

“It is good that the school’s authorities are taking action to tackle the situation,

“And it is better when parents are supportive of it,” he said, adding his ministry has so far not received any reports of students behaving immorally at the school.
