RM3.5mil spent on anti-flood works in Shah Alam’s Section 25

THE Shah Alam City Council has spent RM3.5mil over the past three years to overcome the constant flooding problem faced by residents in Taman Sri Muda, Selangor, Malaysia Nanban reported.

Its councillor S. Ruthra said the residential area known as Section 25 has been having flood issues for nearly 40 years.

While the area has a reputation for flooding and there are constant complaints from the residents, many people do not realise the efforts taken to widen and improve drainage in the area.

The council also continuously cleans the drains and removes large quantities of rubbish from them, an effort that has already cost it RM512,000, Ruthra said.

She said that over the last few months, the area has been flood-free due to such efforts and the overall improvements done in the area.

> Residents in Thoothukudi, India, were able to play cricket, do yoga, and even watch a dance performance on one of the busiest roads in the city after the council closed it to traffic for one day, Tamil Nesan reported.

The city in Tamil Nadu decided to adopt Happy Street Day to allow the residents to use the road for leisure activities. About a kilometre of the usually busy road was closed from 6am to 10pm on Sunday by Thoothukudi Corporation and traffic was diverted.

Still, some motorists slammed the council for “this publicity stunt” and for “diverting from real issues to provide false happiness”.

They said the poor conditions of the other roads in the city should have been the priority instead.
