Top-seeded Malaysian pair crash out of Vietnam Open

-

PETALING JAYA: There was more misery for the men’s doubles department at the Vietnam Open.

Top seeds Chooi Kah Ming-Low Juan Shen suffered a shock 16-21, 22-20, 15-21 defeat to unheralded Tinn Isriyanet-Kittisak Namdash of Thailand in the men’s doubles second round at Ho Chi Minh City yesterday.

Kah Ming-Juan Shen, who lost to Mathias Boe-Carsten Mogensen of Denmark in the second round of the World Championship in Glasgow last month, are the country’s thirdranked pair.

The country’s top two pairs were not that fortunate either in the last two international tournaments last month.

Top pair Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong crashed out in the second round of the world meet while second-ranked pair Teo Ee Yi-Ong Yew Sin lost in the final of the SEA Games individual competition.

There could be a revamp if the coaches decide to split up V Shem-Wee Kiong following their poor showing.

Kah Ming admitted that “we played quite badly”.

“We made simple mistakes in the third game and that broke our confidence,” he said.

In mixed doubles, Chan Peng Soon-Cheah Yee See checked into the quarter-finals after a sensational 21-19, 21-12 win over Hiroki Okamura-Naru Shinoya of Japan.

The Malaysia will meet top seeds Tseng Min-hao-Hu Ling-fang of Taiwan next.

The other Malaysians in the quarter-finals are Goh Giap Chin (men’s singles); Soong Fie Cho-Tee Jing Yi and Chow Mei Kuan-Lee Meng Yean (women’s doubles).
