Driver who allegedly rammed para cyclists claims trial

KUALA SELANGOR: The driver involved in the accident that caused multiple injuries to four Malaysian Para Games cyclists and their head coach claimed trial at a magistrate’s court here.

Businessma­n Anuar Wahab, 46, was charged with driving dangerousl­y and causing an accident near the 12.5km mark of the Kuala LumpurKual­a Selangor (Latar) Highway at 10.45am on Thursday.

Clad in a striped polo Tshirt and black pants, he pleaded not guilty to the charge after it was read to him by a court interprete­r.

The offence under Section 42(1) of Road Transport Act 1987 provided jail up to five years or a fine of up to RM15,000, or both.

In requesting for a minimal bail, Anuar’s counsel M. Saravanan said his client, who hails from Jengka, Pahang, started working in Kuala Selangor recently.

He also has to support his wife, who is not working, and four young children who are still schooling, said Saravanan.

Magistrate Abdul Jalil Salam fixed bail at RM5,000 and ordered the accused to report to the nearest police station every first day of the month until the trial is over.

He also fixed Oct 16 for case remention.

It was reported earlier that national cycling coach Johari Nayan was training with his para cycling team, including Mohd Nor Rizuan Zainal, 31, Khairul Azwan Wahab, 25, Nur Syafiq Suhaimy, 19, and Khairul Nizam Mohd Ali, 23, when a fourwheel drive rammed into them.

The victims suffered multiple injuries and were sent to Sungai Buloh Hospital for treatment.

The driver was subsequent­ly arrested after turning up at the Kampung Baru Subang police station on Thursday.
