KUCHING: Children of Tadika Padungan here showed that they are not too young to express their love for Malaysia when they took part in Star Media Group’s Raise The Flag initiative.

Sixyearold Oscar Chuo wrote “Malaysia” in colourful letters on his Tshirt template, which also featured a hibiscus and a few hearts.

His classmates adorned their templates with the Jalur Gemilang and with colourful hearts and phrases such as “I Love Malaysia”.

The kindergarten’s assistant principal Tan Siew Tin said the children spent about an hour to decorate the Tshirt templates.

“We helped them with the designs. The children did the colouring and some simple drawing. They really enjoyed doing it,” she said.

The teachers also helped the children to cut out and assemble the mini Jalur Gemilang from the newspaper, which they had fun waving.

Principal Angela Lim said it was good for children to learn about patriotism from a young age.

“Patriotism involves many aspects. As educators, we need to ensure that the education system is giving the best to students.

“Teachers can guide them to grow into adults who will contribute to society,” she said.

Lim also said the kindergarten held an early Malaysia Day celebration yesterday which featured a DIY recycled jeans project.

“Every year, we have a project for Malaysia Day that involves the parents. This time, we recycled old jeans into something useful and the best designs won prizes.

“We also sang the national and state anthems and some patriotic songs during the celebration,” she said.

Star Media Group’s twomonth Raise The Flag initiative aims to strengthen patriotism and unity among Malaysians. It ends on Malaysia Day on Sept 16.

The main sponsor is Aset Kayamas Sdn Bhd and the cosponsor is Malaysian Resources Corporation Bhd.
