Table tennis league to provide competitio­n for local players

KUALA LUMPUR: The Table Tennis Associatio­n of Malaysia (TTAM) have launched the Malaysian Table Tennis League (MTTL) to promote the sport among local clubs and private sectors.

The MTTL will be divided into two – the Malaysia Champion League ( MCL) and Malaysia League Cup (MLC). The total prize money is RM100,000.

TTAM secretary Chan Foong Keong said that the idea of introducin­g the MTTL was to provide elite-level competitio­ns for local players.

“It is also to develop and raise the standard of table tennis in Malaysia. We allow each team to register a foreign player to make the competitio­ns more interestin­g,” said Foong Keong.

Eight men’s team and six women’s sides will feature in the 10 rounds of the MCL.

The MCL will begin today and the matches will be held for 10 weekends at various parts in the Klang Valley.

The eight teams in the men’s division are Gema Marketing, Donic Malaysia, A Power Team 1, A Power Team 2, Klang Union TT Club, Layton Bridge Table Tennis Club, Star Elite TT Club and PJ Union Club.

The six women’s teams are Star Elite TT Club, Donic Malaysia, A Power Team, Hokkien Youth Klang, Klang Union Club and Layton Bridge Table Tennis Club.

The MCL will be played on a round-robin homeand-away format.

Each team will play seven matches – five singles and two doubles.

The top two men and women’s teams in the MCL will qualify for the MLC semi-finals scheduled for December. The rest will playoff in a knockout competitio­n and the top two men and women’s teams will qualify for the semi-finals.
