Top floor of Seremban wet market catches fire

SEREMBAN: The top floor of the two-storey Seremban wet market in the town centre here caught fire yesterday evening.

A team of firefighters are still fighting the blaze, which is believed to have started around 7.30pm.

The top floor, which houses food and fruit stalls as well as outlets selling flowers and chicken eggs, is closed after 5pm.

However, the ground floor is usually a hive of activity around 7pm, with lorries transporting vegetables to vendors in the 35-year-old building.

The cause of the fire has yet to be established.

In BuTTERwoRTh, three foreign workers were injured in a fire which razed a warehouse made up of seven adjoining buildings in Jalan Jeti Lama here.

The three Myanmar nationals were among five who were asleep in their 60m x 30m section of the warehouse when the fire broke out at about 3.15am yesterday.

“Two of them sustained severe burns while another had minor burns. They were brought to hospital in an ambulance. The other two workers escaped unhurt,” the Fire and Rescue Department said in a statement.

Twenty-five firemen were despatched to fight the blaze. Assisted by voluntary firefighters, they brought the fire under control at 4.02am and extinguished it at 5am.

Various goods kept inside the warehouse went up in smoke. They included furniture and groceries.

The cause of the fire and amount of losses have yet to be ascertained.
