Seremban wet market traders to get cash aid from MCA

-

SEREMBAN: Each of the 327 traders at the Seremban wet market affected by a massive blaze which swept through the top floor of the double-storey building will receive RM1,000 from MCA.

MCA Youth chief Datuk Chong Sin Woon said the party leadership decided to do its bit on hearing that some traders lost everything in the fire.

“I called both the president (Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai) and deputy president (Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong) after the incident and they immediately agreed that we should help the traders in their time of need,” he said at the market.

The funds, he added, would be raised by the party’s Crisis Relief Squad Malaysia.

Chong said Liow and Dr Wee have also pledged to raise the plight of the traders with Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Minister Tan Sri Noh Omar.

“We are hoping that the Federal Government can quickly allocate funds, so that the damaged upper floor can be rebuilt and the traders can restart their business soon,” he added.

The fire, which started at about 7.30pm on Saturday, tore through the upper level, destroying about 80% of the floor area.

Chong said MCA was also looking at providing interest-free loans to the affected traders through the party-owned Koperasi Jayadiri Malaysia Bhd (Kojadi).

He was at the market yesterday and held a dialogue with the affected traders on how best to sort out the situation.

Chong said he would also raise their plight with the Seremban Municipal Council (MPS).

He said Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan has also directed the MPS to promptly look into the matter.

MPS president Datuk Abd Halim Abd Latif, who was present, said the traders each paid between RM60 and RM110 in monthly rent.
