My mind just went blank, says grand prize winner

GEORGE TOWN: Undergraduate Kelly Ong Ee Ling, 18, was dumbfounded when her number was called out by the emcee during the Penang Starwalk 2017 lucky draw.

She won the grand prize of a Kia Rio car, priced at RM79,888, and a 3D/2N stay at the Tanjung Jara Resort in Dungun, Terengganu, worth RM5,000.

“My mind just went blank. I only realised that it was my number when another participant behind me shouted out that I was the grand prize winner.

“Everything was so surreal,” said the Limkokwing University student of foundation studies in architecture.

Ong received the prizes from Star Media Group chief executive officer and managing director Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai, Naza Kia Malaysia Sdn Bhd Automotive Group group chief executive officer Datuk Samson Anand George and YTL Communications Sdn Bhd (YES) head of marketing Patricia Chooi Po-Po.

The car and hotel stay were sponsored by Naza and YES respectively.

Ong said she would be able to cruise around in her new car, and was looking forward to treating her parents and younger brother to a holiday in Dungun.

“I have been taking part in Starwalk since 2008 and I have won a GPS and hotel stay before.

“To me, Starwalk is an event where I can spend quality time with my family, and I will never forget this 40th Starwalk,” she said.

The first prize, a Samsung S8 and 3D2N stay at Tanjung Jara Resort worth RM8,100, sponsored by YES, went to 64-year-old retiree Lim Mooi Guat.

Lim said she would bring her husband Tang Kwan Heng, 66, to the five-star luxury resort for another honeymoon.

“We have travelled to many countries but not Terengganu, although we’ve heard of its pristine beaches and clear sea.

“We will use the smartphone to take pictures,” said Lim, who has been married for 45 years.

Two employees of Tanaka Electronics (M) Sdn Bhd won a mountain bike each.

Facility executive Syahrul Zulfi Anuar, 41, and operator Habibah Othman, 36, said they would take up cycling.

“I have always wanted a mountain bike which can help maintain a healthy lifestyle,” said Syahrul Zulfi.
