KUALA LUMPUR: Youth representatives from five chambers of commerce and manufacturer groups have banded together to form a national youth council.

The National Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia (NCCIM) Youth Council was launched yesterday at the “Moments of Unity 2.0 – Raising National Flag for Merdeka Celebration 2017” at Wisma Chinese Chamber here.

The NCCIM consists of Malay Chamber of Commerce Malaysia, Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia (ACCCIM), Malaysian Associated Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia, Malaysian International Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers.

Kuala Lumpur Malay Chamber of Commerce president Don Nazwim Don Najib heads the council and he is assisted by five deputies, one from each organisation.

“Our very first task is to organise a town hall meeting to gather feedback ahead of the budget consultation period,” Don Nazwim said.

The 40-year-old said he envisioned a council where members could leverage on each chamber’s local and international networks while enhancing intra-trade within the country.

He was confident that the youth council would contribute meaningfully to national unity and the National Transformation 2050 vision.

“Youths today see themselves as Malaysians first. We can make the country a better place,” he said.

Launching the youth council were Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Tan Sri Joseph Kurup and NCCIM president Tan Sri Ter Leong Yap.

Moments of Unity 2.0 was jointly organised by NCCIM, ACCCIM and the Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Kuala Lumpur and Selangor. It is aimed at cultivating patriotism and upholding the Rukun Negara, in particular among the business community, and encourage businesses to fly the Jalur Gemilang.
