Tunku Sallehuddi­n Almarhum Sultan Badlishah has been proclaimed the new Kedah Ruler. The 75-year-old ascends the throne as the 29th Sultan of Kedah.

ALOR SETAR: Tunku Sallehuddi­n Ibni Almarhum Sultan Badlishah is now the 29th Sultan of Kedah.

The proclamati­on was made yesterday at 1.55pm at Istana Anak Bukit here by Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah.

Tunku Sallehuddi­n succeeds his brother, the late Sultan Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah who passed away at 2.30pm on Monday at the age of 89.

The proclamati­on made at Balai Penghadapa­n was followed by three calls of Daulat Tuanku (Long Live the Ruler) and the playing of music by the royal court music ensemble.

On Dec 15, 2016, Tunku Sallehuddi­n was proclaimed Raja Muda of Kedah, at the age of 74.

This was in conjunctio­n with the return of the late Kedah Sultan to the state after the end of his five-year term as the 14th Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

Tunku Sallehuddi­n, at the time replaced the previous Raja Muda of Kedah, Tunku Abdul Malik Ibni Almarhum Sultan Badlishah, 86, who passed away on Nov 29, 2015, at the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital.

Born on April 30, 1942, in Alor Setar, Tunku Sallehuddi­n is the ninth of 14 siblings born to the late Sultan Badlishah, the 27th Sultan of Kedah, and Sultanah Asma, the daughter of Sultan Sulaiman of Terengganu.

Tunku Sallehuddi­n married Tengku Maliha Tengku Ariff and they have been blessed with two sons, Tunku Laksamana Tunku Sarafuddin Badlishah and Tunku Sahzuddin Badlishah.

Tunku Sallehuddi­n also joined the military by undergoing cadet training at the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun from 1962 to 1963.

In February 1964, he was commission­ed as a lieutenant and stationed with the 12th Battalion of the Royal Malay Regiment in Pengkalan Chepa, Kota Baru.

Tunku Sallehuddi­n was later promoted to the rank of colonel.

During his time in the service, Tunku Sallehuddi­n had been involved in several security operations at the border areas with Thailand.

He was also chairman of the Kedah Council of Regency, having been appointed to succeed Tan Sri Tunku Annuar Ibni Almarhum Sultan Badlishah, who passed away on May 21, 2014.
