Khairul Azwan and Khairul Nizam to know Para Games fate tomorrow

-

BLIND cyclists Khairul Azwan Wahab and Khairul Nizam Mohd Ali will know tomorrow if they can compete in the Asean Para Games.

Khairul Azwan and Khairul Nizam are recovering well since being discharged from the Sungai Buloh Hospital following an accident while training along the Kuala LumpurKuala Selangor (Latar) Highway last Thursday.

Their teammates – Nor Rizuan Zainal (spinal injuries) and Nur Syafiq Suhaimy (fractured leg) – are still warded at the hospital.

The seven-day Kuala Lumpur Asean Para Games starts tomorrow with the opening ceremony.

Chef de mission Datuk Subramaniam Raman Nair was delighted with the recovery of Khairul Azwan and Khairul Nizam from their hand and leg injuries and bruises.

“The two of them are back with the team. The other two need a longer recovery period,” said the Royal Malaysian Navy First Admiral.

“The medical team is monitoring Khairul Azwan and Khairul Nizam daily so as to help them overcome the trauma.

“We let them move around here (at the Seri Pacific Hotel) but we’ve not taken them out to training yet.

“They need to be in the right frame of mind to compete. We’ll have a clearer picture on Sept 16.

“I’ve met with them and they’re coping well. They’re positive and want to compete but we have to look into their health. I’ll wait for the green light from the medical experts before deciding.”

Subramanian, however, said that the accident had put everyone in the team on an “alert mode”.

“We didn’t let the accident demoralise them. We turned the crash into a positive force. It has created an awareness among all of us to be extra careful, especially as we head into the ‘battlefield’,” he said.

“We have reminded the athletes to be cautious.”
