The Star Malaysia

Movie buff to the core

- By LEVIN LOW YUN YI, 16 SMK St Mary, Kuala Lumpur

SPOILER ALERT! I may be about to spoil various movies for you. Read at your own risk.

I think I am like any other regular teenager. I eat food, I play Ed Sheeran on repeat, and I like movies.

You would be hard-pressed to find any person who does not like movies in this world. Granted, that rare breed does exist. But I am not one of them.

I really like watching movies, even though reading books is on the top of my list; I enjoy hunkering down and getting comfy with a good movie.

My latest craze? Spider-Man: Homecoming! You have no idea how much that movie has become a fixture in my life. I was fascinated with SpiderMan, long before I even watched it, but that movie drove me wild.

Tom Holland’s brilliant characterisation of Peter Parker, a teenager who must choose between saving the world from a man-bird or saving his friends at a decathlon nearly brought me to tears. Oh, how long we have waited for the true Spider-Man!

Breathtaking, inspiring, unique, thrilling and simply the greatest homecoming anyone could ask for, it is possibly the best movie I have ever watched.

It is so much a part of my life now; my bag sports a keychain of the web-slinger, a HoCo movie poster hangs from my wall, and I am considering expanding my SpiderMan shirt collection.

Aware of my adoration and fervent support of Spider-Man, one of my friends decided to take the next step: introduce me to Wonder Woman.

“She is AMAZING. You will totally go ballistic after you watch Wonder Woman!”

Due to restrictions set by my parents, I try to watch movies at least once a month. Well aware of that, my friend chose to interrupt one of those hard-earned sessions.

It wasn’t that I did not want to watch Wonder Woman; it was that my heart still ached from the loss of Superman, and I did not want DC Comics to fatally wound me again.

Alas, DC almost did it again that day. As Steve Trevor embraced his fiery doom, my eyes started to sweat. When Diana screamed in anguish after his plane exploded, numerous specks of dust got into my eyes, causing them to water uncontrollably.

As he whispered his final words to Diana, I – oh, forget it – I cried. I cried uncontrollably. Very recently, I bought a Wonder Woman shirt.

My love of movies stretches all the way back to when I was a mere babe, toddling in adorable onesies. However, my taste in movies has certainly changed – I used to obsessively watch Barbie movies, and I reviled Spider-Man. How the worm turns, eh?

(If you see me in real life, there is no way I will admit that I still watch Barbie movies.)

For the life of her, my mum cannot figure out why I love watching movies so much. She will say, “You like reading, right? Why do you also like movies?”

Guess she can blame my dad. He and I share similar passions: ramen, history and movies.

Ever since I was young, my father has been watching movies with me. One of my earliest memories is clutching my dad’s hand in an icecold theatre, wide-eyed at Wolverine

roaring in agony over the body of Jean Grey.

Even to this day, he takes me to watch movies with him; he is the only one I go to movies with, because my parents do not allow me to hang out with my friends.

I still have fun; we were both similarly exhilarated when the Star Wars

theme played over the opening crawl of The Force Awakens.

My dad has a strange tradition though; every time we finish watching a movie, he will ask me, “So girl, what have you learnt?”

To that question I have given him some lacklustre responses: “always wear pants” after Casino Royale, “be blind” after Now You See Me, and “don’t buy me dolls” after The Conjuring.

Despite that, I am constantly inspired by movies, and in awe of the twists and turns devised.

Every time I finish watching a movie, I try to reflect on it, which is something you should also do: what should you take away from it? What would you have done instead? What can you do so you can be as awesome as Spider-Man?
