PM visits tahfiz students in hospital

KUALA LUMPUR: Hospital Kuala Lumpur doctors and other staff are doing their best to treat the four survivors of the tahfiz fire, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

“I visited the victims just now ... they are in very good care. The doctors are doing their best.

“According to the doctors, the victims have a good chance of recovering fully,” he said.

However, he added, the recovery process would likely take some time, but “let us pray that they will get well quickly”.

The Prime Minister visited the victims yesterday after arriving in Kuala Lumpur following the Malaysia Day celebration in Kota Kinabalu, on Saturday night.

Najib said he talked with two students; the other two were heavily sedated and hooked up to ventilators due to smoke inhalation.

Seven victims were admitted to hospital after the fire and three were discharged on Saturday night.

With the prime minister was his wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom and Malaysian Islamic Development Department director-general Tan Sri Othman Mustapha.

Meanwhile, the other students are expected to resume classes at a new building, near the block that was damaged in Thursday’s fire, which is being renovated for the purpose, said school principal Mohd Zahid Mahmood.

“We will bring in furniture and other items. The building will also be inspected by the Fire and Rescue Department and given a certificate of fitness. When all these processes are completed, the students will resume their studies there,” he told reporters. — Bernama
