Men accused of sexually assaulting seven-year-old girl face decades in jail

SIBU: The grandfathe­r and uncle of a sevenyear-old girl have been charged under the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 with sexually assaulting the child.

The 53-year-old grandfathe­r faces four charges under Section 14 of the Act for physical sexual assault on a child, which provides for a jail sentence of not more than 20 years and whipping upon conviction.

He also faces four charges under Section 16 of the same Act which is for people in a relationsh­ip of trust with the victim. People in such a relationsh­ip include parents, teachers, guardians and wardens.

They are punishable upon conviction with no fewer than five years’ jail and two strokes of the rotan.

According to the statement of the facts, the accused is said to have committed physical contact on his granddaugh­ter by touching her private parts for sexual purposes from May to July this year at his longhouse in Durin.

The victim’s uncle, 26, is also facing four charges under Section 14 and five charges under Section 16 of the Act for the same offences, allegedly committed from May to August this year.

The uncle also faces an additional charge under Section 15 of the same Act, for non-physical sexual assault on a child, which carries a jail term of not more than 10 years or a fine of not more than RM20,000 upon conviction.

He is accused of causing the victim to watch a pornograph­ic video clip on his mobile phone sometime between May and August this year.

No plea was recorded from the two accused at the Subordinat­e Court here.

In another case at the same court, Yaw Swee Kuong, 33, was charged under Section 14 of the Act for touching the private parts of a 17-year-old learning-impaired girl on the morning of Sept 7 at Bukit Lima Sports Complex here.

He was also charged under Section 15 of the Act for allegedly masturbati­ng in front of her. No plea was taken from Yaw.

Surbordina­te Court registrar Rommie Ahmad Zaidi ordered the three accused to be present at the Sessions Court today for further mention of their cases.
