Jobless man charged with threatenin­g cops

He is ordered to get month-long psychiatri­c evaluation at hospital

IPOH: A 45-year-old man claimed trial at the Sessions Court here to five charges of obstructin­g the police, threatenin­g to kill them and causing injuries to one.

Leong Chee Kae, who is jobless, is alleged to have committed the offences at his house in Taman Tasek Jaya on Sept 15 at about 11pm. He looked calm and shook his head while being read the charges before Sessions Court judge Norashima Khalid yesterday.

In the first charge under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder, Leong is said to have splashed kerosene at five policemen and threatened to throw a candle to burn them.

In the second charge under Section 506 of the same Code, Leong is said to have threatened to set one Insp Ishak Jumain on fire if he attempted to arrest him.

For the third charge under Section 324 of the Penal Code, he is accused of causing injuries with a knife to one L/Kpl Puvandra.

Leong was also charged with obstructin­g the police from performing their duties under Section 186 of the Penal Code and Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act for using profanitie­s against them.

Norashima ordered Leong to get psychiatri­c evaluation at hospital for a month and set Oct 16 for mention.

National Legal Aid Foundation lawyer Chiang Mei Wan, who represente­d Leong, said her client had a history of mental disability and used to seek treatment at the Ulu Kinta Hospital Bahagia located in Tanjung Rambutan.

At the magistrate’s court earlier, Leong also pleaded not guilty to a sixth charge of causing grievous hurt to one CY Leong at a coffeeshop in Taman Klebang Restu on Sept 15 at about 3pm. He was also ordered by the court to undergo a month-long psychiatri­c evaluation.
