Powerlifter Gustin shows his kids the way with a bronze

FIFTY-year-old powerlifter Gustin Jenang (pic) believes that his bronze at the Kuala Lumpur Asean Para Games will serve as a motivation for his two sons.

And Sarawakian

Gustin did just that when he finished third in the 59kg category at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MiTEC) yesterday.

Gustin, whose two sons — Bonnie Bunyau, 18, and Bryan Junency, 20 — are also competing in the Para Games, lifted 125kg to bag the bronze. Thailand’s Sukjarern Choochat (166kg) took the gold while Vietnamese Nguyen Van Phuc (165kg) clinched the silver.

“It’s good to be here with two of my sons and competing as a family. It is a very emotional moment for us,” said Gustin. “I’m taking part in my second Para Games. I first competed in 2009 but failed to make it to the other editions.

“This is a proud moment for me. I want it (the medal) to be an inspiration for my sons as they are just starting their powerlifting career.”

Bonnie, who trains full-time under the National Sports Council’s (NSC) elite programme, finished fourth in the 65kg category yesterday with a lift of 156kg.

Thai Kasanun Narong took the gold, followed by Vietnam’s Nguyen Thanh Xuan (silver) and Filipino Agustin Kitan (bronze).

Bryan, meanwhile, will compete in the 72kg class today.

Gustin is keeping his fingers crossed that Bryan will also make the podium.

“Bryan has been in the NSC programme for a couple of years now. So, he should get on to the podium.

“I encouraged my two boys to go for it and to do their best. They have age on their side, but like any other sports, you also need to work hard to succeed in powerlifting. There is no other way,” said Gustin.

Bonnie blamed his inexperience for missing out on the medals.

“I’m still new to the sport as I only took it up last year. So, the lack of experience was a factor,” said Bonnie.

“It’s great to be here at the Games with my family. I hope to learn from this setback. I’m a little disappointed, but I also accept the fact that I wasn’t good enough today (yesterday).”
