Liow: Strengthen youth’s moral values

-

BENTONG:

The Darul Quran Ittifaqiyah tahfiz fire revealed a glaring need for moral values to be strengthened among youths in the country, said MCA president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai.

The arson involved minors and showed that the value system in our society needed to be bolstered, he said.

The fire on Sept 14 resulted in the deaths of 21 students and two teachers.

Liow said he was very concerned over the incident and added that it was also important to improve the education system.

“We need to give our children a wholesome education, not just in academics but also on values with emphasis on human relations,” said Liow after the launch of a psychological education programme at SRJK (C) Perting in Bentong.

He added more importance should be placed on mental health, especially among youths.

“Depression has become a serious issue in the country because society is now filled with pressure and challenges,” he said, adding that the younger generation needed to be equipped to handle the pressure of modern society.

Liow said he was glad the school had organised the psychological education programme, with a trainer from the Satir Whole Person Development Association of Malaysia.

“I’m happy that the school organised this programme. In Bentong we are not only focused on infrastructure development but on personal development as well,” he said.

Later, Liow also attended a mooncake festival held at Taman Seri Bayu in Karak. Over 50 residents of all races took part in the celebration.
