KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia will play host to the internationally acclaimed 5th 1M-World Congress in Sports and Exercise Medicine 2017, this time bringing together representatives from more than 30 countries.

Two years ago, the Society of Sports & Exercise Medicine Malaysia (SSEMM) also hosted the prestigious congress which brought together 35 world class speakers from 25 countries.

SSEMM president Prof Datuk Seri Dr Mohamed Mydin Mohd Musa (pic) said the event, which was accredited by the Health Ministry, would be jointly organised with the International Society for Sport Traumatology of the Hand (ISSPORTH).

Prof Dr Mohamed Mydin said so far, countries such as Canada, Denmark, India, Italy, Egypt, Iraq, Kuwait, Britain, United States, Norway, Nigeria, Ghana,

Iran, South Africa, Japan, Brunei, Singapore, Columbia, Saudi Arabia and Hong Kong have confirmed their participation.

“Among the objectives are to bring in world class consultants in the field of sports and exercise, to interact in open presentations on their research based knowledge and to disseminate them to all athletes, paramedics and allied sports science specialists.

“This will help to pave the way for athletes in achieving optimal performance through maximising human and generic potentials, health, nutrition and quality medical care.

“Renowned speakers and consultants like anaesthetists, radiologists, orthopaedic surgeons and other experts in allied medicine will also be available to share their knowledge with participants,” he said in an interview.

Prof Dr Mohamed Mydin said Malaysia has the capacity and expertise to organise these world congresses and was even applauded as one of the best organisers in the past by participants from the United States, Britain and other European countries.

“We are happy to receive such recognition from overseas and full support from the Malaysian Government,” he said, adding that the congress was timely to prepare the nation’s athletes for future sports meets, especially after Malaysia’s biggest haul of 145 gold medals in the just concluded 29th SEA Games.

Prof Dr Mohamed Mydin said there is presently a memorandum of understanding with University of Bath to create more distance study courses for master’s degree and that talks were being held with local universities to offer post graduate diplomas in Malaysia for aspiring medical graduates in this field.

“The other aim is to organise international workshops and short courses for the benefit of our medical doctors,” he said.

Recently, Prof Dr Mohamed Mydin represented Malaysia to give a plenary speech at the ISSPORTH conference in Milan, Italy.

During the 4th World Congress in 2015, Sultan Ahmad Shah was accorded the Royal Legend of Football award in recognition of his untiring devotion and contribution towards the development of football in the country and Asean region.

The Pahang state Ruler was also made a Royal Fellow of the SSEMM.

Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, the wife of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, is SSEMM patron.

This year’s theme is “Optimising Human & Genetic Potentials for Greater Performances”. It will be held at Royale Chulan Hotel Kuala Lumpur from Nov 17 to 19.
