A FOUR-member team comprising Datuk Lee Eng Guan, Zulkifli Mohd Zain, Paramsothy Yoganathan and Siti Jauharah Lee Abdullah accumulated 125 Stableford points to win the Malaysia Day Muhibbah golf tournament at Subang National Golf Club (KGNS) in Petaling Jaya.

Team captain and avid golfer Lee, 72, said he had won many tournaments but this was the most memorable one.

“I love this tournament because it promotes harmony among the races. I think it’s the only tournament of it’s kind that’s held on Malaysia Day.

“I did not win as an individual; it was a team effort.

“Celebrating the win with my team members on this auspicious day is simply wonderful as we have fond memories of our golfing experience,” said Lee, who took up the sport in 1970 and has not slowed down.

In second place was the combination of Choong Mun Choo, Subramaniam Arikrishnan, Anwar Ismail and Alyah Tan who tallied 124 Stableford points.

Lee Siew Choy, Nathan Balakrishnan, Mohd Rafiza Ab Rais and Lilian Wong Lai Lin were third.

Organised by KGNS, the Malaysia Day tournament aims to promote unity with each full flight having a

Malay, Indian, Chinese and a lady golfer. Team placings depend on the combined scores of players.

The winners received their prizes from KGNS president Tengku Datuk Shamsul Bahrin Raja Mohd Ali and vice-president Raymond Teoh.

During the event, a cake resembling the Jalur Gemilang was cut by the organising committee followed by a fireworks display and club members singing Negaraku.

Some 350 members enjoyed local fare like satay, ketupat, roti jala, cendol, Malay cakes, rojak, grilled lamb, teh tarik and fruits during dinner as well as music and traditional dances.

KGNS social and recreation committee chairman and organising chairman Jasvinder Singh Bhatt said the club was the brainchild of first Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman through an Act of Parliament in 1968.

He added that there were 30 flights this year.

“We have been organising this tournament for the last 20 years to celebrate Malaysia Day.

“As a club that prides itself on racial unity and being family oriented, we also hold four other major events yearly to celebrate Hari Raya Puasa, Chinese New Year, Deepavali and Christmas to bring members closer together.

“We hope that more golfers will join this club and be involved in our activities,” he said.
