Hoffenheim go top with victory over Schalke

-

Hoffenheim beat Schalke 2-0 with a goal in each half to go provisionally top of the Bundesliga.

In a match which pitted two of the youngest managers in European football against each other, 30-yearold Julian Nagelsmann came out on top against his 32-year-old opposite number Domenico Tedesco.

The hosts racked up their fourth victory from six games in rather easier fashion than their 3-2 comeback success at Mainz onWednesday, which was crowned by Mark Uth’s injury-time winner.

Dennis Geiger’s low drive put them ahead in the 13th minute and Lukas Rupp added another deep in stoppage time to give Julian Nagelsmann’s unbeaten team their fourth win in six league matches, lifting them to 14 points.

Schalke, who have now lost three of their six games, drop to seventh on nine.

RB Leipzig, last season’s run- ners-up, narrowly beat Eintracht Frankfurt 2-1 for their first win in three matches and climbed to sixth on 10 points.

Goals from Jean-Kevin Augustin in the 28th minute and Timo Werner in the 67th had the hosts, who had not won in three games in all competitions, in control, with Ante Rebic pulling one back for the visitors in the 77th minute.

Pablo De Blasis’ 54th-minute penalty earned Mainz a 1-0 win at home to Hertha Berlin, who had captain Vedad Ibisevic sent off in the 89th minute, apparently for dissent.

Struggling pair Werder Bremen and Freiburg were left still waiting for their first wins of the campaign after a 0-0 draw. The match between Stuttgart and Augsburg also finished goalless.

Champions Bayern Munich dropped to third on 13 after wasting a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 against VfL Wolfsburg on Friday. — Agencies
