Umi intends to use cash incentive for wedding

-

UMI Syuhadah Idris is on cloud nine after winning three golds.

The Perlis athlete will get RM40,000 from the National Sports Council (NSC) incentive scheme for winning the women’s discus, shot putt and javelin F37 (cerebral palsy) at the Kuala Lumpur Asean Para Games.

She will use the money when she ties the knot with para archer Anwari Mohamed, 27, next year.

Under the NSC incentive scheme, an athlete will be rewarded RM20,000 for the first gold. The subsequent gold is worth RM10,000.

The 26-year-old Umi is now looking forward to the big pay-day.

“I never expected to win three golds as I didn’t know the strength of the other athletes.

“I made my debut in Singapore two years ago and competed in only one event – the shot putt. I did well to win the gold to receive RM20,000,” said Umi.

“But this time I will get double of what I got in Singapore. I will use the money to get married with Anwari. I met him during training at the Kampung Pandan Sports Complex in August last year.

“We have not fixed the date for our marriage yet but it will likely be early next year,” said Umi.

She added that Anwari was supposed to compete in the team recurve event but was forced to skip the Games after injuring his right shoulder during training two weeks ago.

“Anwari and I will train hard to feature in the Asian Para Games next year,” said Umi, who won a bronze in the shot putt in the 2014 Incheon Asian Para Games in South Korea.
