YOUTH and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin has called for greater support from fans for para athletes as they strive for excellence in their respective disciplines.

Khairy said although the support shown during the Kuala Lumpur Asean Para Games was good, he felt that the efforts could have been better.

He said this after watching Malaysia beat Thailand 9-5 to win the men’s goalball gold for the first time in five Para Games at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MiTEC) yesterday.

“Over the course of one week we have seen some tremendous support for the Para Games. But it can be a whole lot better. I am pleased overall with what we have achieved in some of the sports,” he said.

He added that he was impressed with the goalball team’s fighting spirit and complimented them on their win.

“The team did very well and to finally beat the Thais was satisfying. They are fighters and the support today in the final was very good. I am happy with it and that’s what we need to see in other sports as well.

“From many aspects, the Para Games were a success and we can be proud of our athletes. But we will review the Games and look at all aspects again,” he added.

The Malaysian contingent finished second overall with 90 golds, 85 silvers and 84 bronzes.

Indonesia emerged champions with a 126-75-50 haul.
