> Act together

Government should table immediately the bill to amend the Marriage and Divorce Act on unilateral conversion and not wait until it gets a two-thirds majority in Parliament.

Why wait until after GE14 to tackle the unilateral conversion of children? Although Barisan Nasional doesn’t have the twothirds majority in Parliament, they can easily get the support of the Opposition to have Article 12 amended and passed.

> Moderation is the way

Totally agree with Wong Chun Wai’s article “Moderation, the way to go” ( Sunday Star, Sept 24). Two thumbs up.

> Out of step

The self-service laundrette in Muar which caters to customers of one religion only is tangentially out of step with our way of life and will only promote the washing of dirty linen in public with unwanted holier-than-thou attitudes. It is a sad reflection of how small-town attitudes can impact on society as a whole. All talk about religious harmony will be washed away like detergent buds if such businesses are allowed to flourish. – 5th Beatle No matter how politicians persist in saying that we are united, reality is far from the truth. Latest is the laundrette in Muar and cancellation of the beer festival. We are becoming a country of “cannot”. Please go back to the days when we did not step on the toes of people of different cultures. Let there be peace instead of this growing trend of extremism.

It is a dangerous precedent set by the laundrette in Muar. Others may follow, as in restaurants, clinics, supermarkets, etc.

> New hospital needed

A representative from the Health Ministry should come over and take a look at Seri Manjung general hospital. This district needs another hospital. – Subra

> Tackle the real issues

Why are immigrants clamouring to get into Western countries? Because of their social structures. These countries have not deteriorated into vice pits as some extremists would want us to believe. In our country, certain groups go after insignificant issues when real crimes like incest, drugs, Mat Rempit, etc are becoming more rampant.

> Help for Sikhs

I appreciate the PM initiating the Cabinet Committee on Indian affairs and the Indian Blueprint. He is serious in assisting this community. I also call on the PM to seek ways to assist the 90,000 members of the Sikh community here. We have the poor in this community too. – Bulbir Singh
