BEIJING: Malaysia has called on China to help the Rohingya community in Myanmar’s Rakhine State, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Dr Ahmad Zahid, who met China’s Secretary of Central Political and Legal Affairs Commission Meng Jianzhu, said he hoped the country – which shared a border with Myanmar – would play a constructive role in resolving the crisis.

“Meng told me China had, in fact, helped the Rohingya at refugee camps in Bangladesh.

“He said a contribution of US$10mil (RM41.75mil) had been distributed to the community through Bangladesh,” he told a press conference at the end of his three-day working visit here.

Meng Jianzhu also thanked Malaysian police for its efforts in tackling cybercrime, terrorism and telephone frauds including the Macau scam.

Dr Ahmad Zahid said 416 China nationals suspected of being involved in the Macau scam had been arrested in Malaysia, since 2014.

These syndicates, he added, were believed to have cheated their mostly Chinese national victims of some 500mil yuan (RM320.45mil).

Dr Ahmad Zahid said China also complimented Malaysia for arresting and sending back 29 Chinese nationals suspected of being involving in terrorism.

While in China, Dr Ahmad Zahid also met with Chinese Public Security Minister Guo Shengkun and attended the opening ceremony of the 86th General Assembly of Interpol.

Dr Ahmad Zahid was among speakers during the group meeting attended by the Heads of Delegation from the 158 member states of Interpol on Tuesday night.

He called on Interpol to help developing countries combat cybercrime and talked about strategies to tackle cross-border crime.
