Coach Pei Tty wants consistency from Mei Kuan-Meng Yean

-

PETALING JAYA: National women’s doubles head coach Wong Pei Tty is not happy with the yo-yo form of Chow Mei Kuan-Lee Meng Yean.

The world No. 22 put up a limp performance in the 9-21, 12-21 thrashing by world No. 10 Puttita Supajirakul-Sapsiree Taerattanachai of Thailand in the quarter-finals of the KL SEA Games last month.

The Malaysian pair bounced back to reach the semi-finals of the Vietnam Open earlier this month.

Then last week, they again highlighted their inconsistency and the lack of fighting spirit in the 9-21, 12-21 bashing by Japan’s world No. 5 Yuki Fukushima-Sayaka Hirota in the first round of the Japan Open.

Pei Tty believes that the pair still have a long way to go before they can earn a breakthrough at the higher level.

“I know they tried hard at the SEA Games but I’m just not happy with the way they played,” said Pei Tty.

“They’re not playing with confidence and they worry too much. They’re not showing the kind of fighting spirit we want to see.

“In Japan, they were up against a strong pair. But they just lacked fire.

“I’m also not satisfied with their recent showings because winning or losing is learning process. The players need to have the right attitude.”

Mei Kuan-Meng Yean certainly have a lot of work to do to regain Pei Tty’s faith.

The pair hope to excel in two tournaments in Europe – the Dutch Open from Oct 10-15 and the Denmark Open from Oct 17-22.

Mei Kuan-Meng Yean are the third seeds at the Dutch meet and should at least reach the quarter-finals, where they are likely to face seventh seeds Ayako Sakuramoto-Yukiko Takahata of Japan.

The other Malaysian pair in the fray are world No. 19 Lim Yin LooYap Cheng Wen, who are seeded second and will face Holland’s Eefje Muskens-Imke Van Der Aar in the first round.

“We sent Yin Loo-Cheng Wen to some Superseries events earlier this year, but they are just not ready,” said Pei Tty.

“Cheng Wen, in particular, still lacks confidence. That’s why we have moved them down a level.”

The Dutch meet is the only tournament for Yin Loo-Cheng Wen.
