Cameron Highlands a sea of plastic sheets

- DATUK WEE BENG GEE Petaling Jaya

ON a visit to Cameron Highlands recently, we were shocked at the scenery before us as we drove into the area. The last time we visited Cameron Highlands was five years ago.

We travelled from Kelantan through Gua Musang, Lojing, Kampung Raja and then onwards to Tanah Rata where we spent the night.

As we drove towards Kampung Raja from Lojing, we could see no greenery in sight. The landscape was just a sea of white plastic sheets as far as the eye could see. The sheets were used as covering for greenhouses.

The scenery was no different as we approached the Kampung Raja township. It was also a sea of white plastic sheets.

The worst part was when we saw a lot of plastics sheets filled with manure scattered by the roadside.

Will people ever learn? The mud flood that inundated the highlands a few years ago appears to have been forgotten.

Shops are mushrooming by the roadside, causing massive jams for those holidaying in the highlands.

There are no proper parking bays/lots and visitors just park their vehicles haphazardly without giving due consideration to others.

I remember the days when we played golf at the only golf club in Cameron Highlands. The water flowing in the river was crystal clear and clean. This is not the case anymore. It’s time the authorities look into this and act fast before Cameron Highlands loses its attraction as a holiday destination.
