Perlis laundry now open to all

Raja Muda Perlis had a chat with outlet owner to clear the air

KANGAR: The controversial “Muslim-only” self-service launderette in Jalan Kampung Bakau is now open to all after a visit by Raja Muda of Perlis Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail.

State Mufti Datuk Dr Mohd Asri Zainal Abidin said the Raja Muda visited the outlet and held a “family-like” discussion with the owner on Thursday.

“After the visit, the owner agreed to open his outlet to all,” Dr Mohd Asri said, adding that he was also present during the royal visit.

Earlier, speaking to reporters at the state-level Maal Hijrah celebra- tion at Dewan Warisan here, Dr Mohd Asri said it was not wrong for the owner to have a launderette with an Islamic concept, equipped with a surau, and recorded verses from the Quran being played.

“However, it is not right for a Muslim to deny services to other races.

“The owner said he did not intend to create uneasiness among non-Muslims,” he said, urging Muslims not to practise double standards when dealing with people of other faiths.

Dr Mohd Asri said that if a Muslim could visit Thailand, London and other non-Muslim countries for vacation, there was no reason why non-Muslims could not use a launderette run by a Muslim.

“I’ve heard many reasons, including that non-Muslims may have dog fur on their clothes.

“I have heard many giving such a reason. This is not correct. Firstly, how sure are we that it is dog fur? It could be cat fur.

“Secondly, many of us move around with non-Muslims when we go for vacation to Thailand, London and many other countries. So, let’s stop the double standards,” he said.

Such ideology, Dr Mohd Asri said would only create misconceptions about Islam instead of showing the good examples that will make people respect the religion.

“Some Muslim owners do not like non-Muslims bringing pet dogs to their premises. If that is the case, then put up a sign saying dogs are not allowed. Don’t put up signs that say the services are only for Muslims. This is not right,” he said.

Dr Mohd Asri advised Muslims that if there was no sign of dirt ( najis) through the colour, smell or taste, then it is considered clean.

The Perlis launderette issue came after another controversial “Muslim-only” self-service launderette in Taman Seri Cempaka in Muar.

After a dressing down from the Sultan of Johor on Tuesday, the owner apologised for his action and also opened his door to all.
