BENTONG: The Malaysian Chinese community needs to stand united to safeguard their rights and interests, says Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai.

In slamming the DAP for allying with PAS and emboldening it to push for its Islamist agenda, the Transport Minister and Bentong MP said the party had diluted the influence of the Chinese community.

“What DAP did has placed the Chinese community’s voice outside of mainstream politics.

“We need to ensure that Malaysian Chinese have a voice at both federal and state levels,” he said.

Liow, also MCA president, was speaking to residents at a MidAutumn Festival celebration in Repas new village here.

He said while Islam is Malaysia’s official religion, all should strive to preserve the multicultural nature of the country.

Citing the recent cancellation of a beer festival in Kuala Lumpur and the nowresolved “Muslimsonly” Johor launderette, Liow lamented that these were examples of Malaysia inching towards Talibanisation.

He added that the spirit of the Federal Constitution must be upheld so that Malaysia continued to be a harmonious and united multiethnic society.

Liow said he has called on DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang and his son, DAP secretarygeneral Lim Guan Eng, to own up to the political situation they created by working with PAS.

“In fact, they should apologise to the Chinese community for the disservice they have done,” he said.

Liow also celebrated the MidAutumn Festival with Karak villagers.

He took part in lantern walkabouts and distributed mooncakes to the residents.

What DAP did has placed the Chinese community’s voice outside of mainstream politics.
