An adventure worth sharing
#MYUK60 winner excited to bring England to social media followers
KUALA LUMPUR: Going on a big, exciting British adventure has always been a dream for 23-yearold Michaelle Phoenix.
Now after winning the #MYUK60: A Great British Adventure contest organised by the British High Commission Kuala Lumpur, the International Relations major will finally be going on the trip of her dreams.
Phoenix, a final-year student at The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus, won a seven-day all expense paid trip and will be travelling to London, Manchester, Edinburgh and out to the Scottish Highlands from Oct 10 to 17.
“This will be my first ever visit to England and I’m excited to be able to humanise the bilateral relations between our countries.
“This trip is not just about me going on a British adventure, it’s also about me bringing along all those who follow me on social media and the British High Commission,” said Phoenix, a Chinese Peranakan who was born and raised in Petaling Jaya.
Her itinerary will include a luxury afternoon tea at Harrods, meeting British MPs in Westminster, picnicking with Malaysian students at the University of Manchester and marching up the Royal Mile to Edinburgh Castle.
Her adventure will be document- ed and shared on the UKinMalaysia social media channels by travel blogger Mohd Shahril Fawzy, better known as Pojiegraphy.
“I hope to bring back a British adventure, share its heritage, legacy and history as well as show Malaysians that investments in Britain are amazing and accessible,” said Phoenix, who will also be visiting Malaysian business investments while there.
Phoenix edged out two other finalists which required participants to network with the judges, before a winner was selected.
Former Court of Appeal judge Tan Sri V.C. George announced her as the winner at the British High Commissioner’s residence here yesterday.
Phoenix is the founder of community organisations Negawatt Revolution, which focuses on reducing electricity usage and The Strip Club, which provides students with nutritious meal options.
Acting British High Commissioner Paul Rennie said the contest, which required participants to submit a creative photo entry, was organised for the first time this year as part of the wider campaign to commemorate the 60th anniversary of diplo- matic ties between Britain and Malaysia.
“The fact that we’re able to offer the winner her first ever trip to the UK explores a new generation of Malaysians’ interest in the UK.
“I hope that she will use the social media following she has to show Malaysians her experience and to share her understanding of modern Britain to modern Malaysia,” he said.
The Malaysian High Commission in London is also holding a corresponding contest, added Rennie, whereby the winner will go on a Malaysian adventure.
