Itching four a win

Gavin hoping to lose bridesmaid’s tag in his fourth try

PETALING JAYA: Will Gavin Kyle Green be fourth time lucky in his bid for a maiden Asian Tour title?

The 23-year-old, with three runner-up finishes under his belt this season, will be eager to go one better as he heads into today’s final round of the Mercuries Taiwan Masters just one shot behind Filipino Juvic Pagunsan.

Joint overnight leader Gavin shot a one-under 71 while Pagunsan carded a two-under 70 in the third round at the Taiwan Golf and Country Club yesterday.

Gavin did almost nothing wrong except for a double bogey at the par-four 14th as he collected three birdies to finish on eight-under 208 – two strokes clear of third-placed Keith Horne of South Africa.

“Anybody can win tomorrow (today). I’m going to shoot for an under-par round and give myself birdie looks,” said Gavin, who sits third on the Asian Tour of Merit.

“If I can keep the ball in the fairways and capitalise on the par-fives, I should be okay. I can’t control what other people do.”

Ben Leong also kept his slim hopes of ending his nine-year title drought with a 71, four shots off the lead in joint fourth.

As things stand, Ben is set to register his season-best result by improving on the creditable joint 12th at the Maybank Championship in February.

Nicholas Fung is also eyeing a top-10 finish after overcoming two early bogeys to shoot a 71 and climb 17 spots to joint 13th on an even 216.
