PETALING JAYA: Teen burn survivor Elizabeth Elida Edward was on edge at the prospect of Malaysians reading about her life story.

“I thought that people would not like me,” said the 15-year-old, who survived a home fire 13 years ago with severe burns, inhalation injuries and several deformities.

But she was wrong. Within hours of her story being published in The Star, kind-hearted Malaysians rallied to extend their support for Elizabeth, a student at SMK Wira Penrissen in Kuching, Sarawak.

Some readers have offered to fulfil Elizabeth’s dream of owning a laptop to document her stories.

Meanwhile, others wished to donate to Elizabeth’s mother M. Murni J. Muteh, 42, who works as a driver, to ease her burden.

“They are so kind and I feel really touched by the gestures,” Elizabeth said when The Star contacted her yesterday.

Facebook user Zhishen Hiew commented on The Star Online Facebook page:

“I fully respect the mother for not giving up. Raising a child with special needs is not easy. God bless both of you.”

“I’m proud of her,” wrote Eddie See about Murni.

“I admire her will to live. Stay strong,” wrote Chong Weng Kit.

Meanwhile, Lola Lily posted: “She makes me realise my condition is not that bad after all”.

“May God bless the girl. Stay strong. My prayers for you,” wrote MP Vanitha.

Many Facebook users also expressed their wish to donate for Elizabeth’s recovery and treatment.

“Please share their particulars or set up a trust fund to help them,” wrote Felicia Mei Yee Hua.

“What an inspiration. I’m touched by the people here wanting to lend a helping hand,” said Terence Tam.

Even her doctor is inspired by Elizabeth’s determination.

“Elizabeth’s courage and will to persevere is incredible.

“Indeed tribute is due to Elizabeth and her mother too, who is constantly at her side to help and encourage her,” said Dr John Ranjit, who heads the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Department at the Sarawak General Hospital.
