SEPANG: Motorsports fans are sad to see the Formula One Petronas Malaysia Grand Prix come to an end and want other similar events to be held at the Sepang Circuit.

Businessman Akram Azly, 33, said he would like to see the circuit tie up with a car manufacturer, which would gain more recognition from events there.

He said that he would be delighted to see Perodua, for example, tie up with the circuit and organise motorsports events there.

“It would be like a breath of fresh air and many can relate to it because they would have owned a Kancil or Myvi at some point in their lives,” he said.

Engineer Pang Kang Hui, 31, said he would love to see drifting events at Sepang.

“The D1 Grand Prix is an exciting event. The sport is very big in Japan and Malaysians are also converting their vehicles for drifting,” he said, adding that the event would pull in the crowd.

Public relations practitioner T. Avineshwaran, 26, said the circuit could be used to develop motorsports in the country.

“We need more professional dri vers for international events. It would be nice to see someone pick up from where former Formula 1 driver Alex Yoong left off,” he said.

He also said that more junior events like Formula Renault, Formula 2 and Formula 3 could also be held there.

The country saw its final Formula One Petronas Malaysia Grand Prix on Sunday. The race had first opened here in 1999 and the “F1nale” drew 110,604 spectators.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said the circuit would not become a white elephant and would be used for other motorsports events.
