Talking helps to boost learning

- SZE LOONG STEVE NGEOW Kajang

EDUCATION Minister Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid made the right call that “students must overcome the fear of speaking English” ( The Star, Oct 2). All too often, students tend to spend time focusing on studying grammar and lists of words and improving vocabulary instead of actually going out and putting what they’ve learned into practice.

Talking to people in English can be challenging but it has to be done as the most effective learning still happens face to face.

Native or competent English speakers generally don’t care if you make mistakes. They realise that it is more important for novice English speakers to reach out and build their skills in a very real way. As English is the language of science, technology, and business, English speakers have more opportunities to work with others in these fields and to share ideas.

Speaking and listening in English will boost practical communication skills in a way that textbook learning never will.

Schools should offer small groups and one-toone lessons during school hours and even after hours to offer students more chances to practice their spoken English. Talking to online pals can be helpful too.

In short, students need to seek out avenues that allow them to practise speaking English, thus boosting their confidence and competence.
