Wise Jin Wei to focus solely on singles event at world junior meet

PETALING JAYA: Shuttler Goh Jin Wei is beginning to wise up about her game.

Jin Wei, who won the girls’ singles title at the 2015 world junior meet, has been playing in the singles and doubles events.

It took a toll on her as she pulled out injured during the Asian Junior Team Championships in July where Malaysia lost 3-1 to Indonesia in the semi-finals.

And the 17-year-old SEA Games gold medallist has now decided to focus solely in the singles for the World Junior Championships in Yogjakarta from Oct 9-22.

“The team is quite strong this time. The boys’ singles and doubles can be counted on to deliver points,” said Jin Wei.

“And that’s why I’m playing singles this time.

“This is my fifth world juniors and I’ve been training a lot harder since losing in the final of the Singapore International Series last month.

“I’ve studied the video analysis to see where my weaknesses are.

“I’ll definitely go out there and give it a good fight.

“And I’ve been playing a lot better leading up to this year’s world juniors compared to last year’s meet.

“Hopefully, there’s not too much expectations on me,” added Jin Wei with a grin.

Her main challengers will be Asian Junior champion Han Yue and Cai Yanyan of China, Indonesia’s Gregoria Mariska and South Korea’s Kim Min-ji

Besides Jin Wei, Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) head coach Kwan Yoke Meng is also targeting another title through Leong Jun Hao, the Asian Junior boys’ singles champion.

Malaysia will compete in the mixed team event from Oct 9-14 before the individual event starts from Oct 16-22.
