SHAH ALAM: Smashed bottles of beer were left at the gates of the state secretariat building by Red Shirt’s leader Datuk Seri Jamal Yunos, after he was barred from sending in a truckload of beer over his objections to beer festivals.

Jamal arrived at about 10am, with some 20 supporters and a pickup truck filled with crates of beer, only to find the gates closed.

He told reporters Selangor should not encourage its people to get involved in “immoral and senseless activities”.

To make his point, Jamal said he wanted to send the beers to Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Azmin Ali’s office.

“He (Azmin) and his gang can drink all they want inside ... let him drink until he dies in his own office but not anywhere outside,” he said.

The Better Beer Festival 2017, which was supposed to be held in Kuala Lumpur, was cancelled with police saying there was a real treat from militants while the upcoming Centro German F&B Party, in Klang had hit a snag over permits from authorities.

The beer cartons and bottles brought by Jamal were pasted with a logo bearing “The Better Beer Festival 2017” concealing the brand name.

Jamal used a sledgehammer to smash bottles in at least 10 crates while lashing out at DAP state executive councillors for being kurang ajar (insolent) for supporting the beer festival and thanking their PAS counterparts for objecting to it.

“Is this how we celebrate? ... We don’t want this and we don’t like this,” he added as he continued swinging the hammer.

The state secretariat building's enforcement chief Misnun Ramli told the group they could not leave the broken bottles behind but they ignored him.

Even if they wanted to protest, he said the group should not have left the mess behind.

He added that a police report was lodged around noon, and a forensics team along with several officers arrived at the scene. The mess was cleared later by a cleaning contractor.

Shah Alam OCPD Asst Comm Shafien Mamat confirmed receiving the report and said the case was being investigated as an illegal assembly.
