Fazriq aims to follow father’s footsteps after winning Under-15 doubles crown

-

KUALA LUMPUR: Muhd Fazriq Razif wants to emulate his father Datuk Razif Sidek by playing in the senior team in the next three years.

And the 13yearold showed he was on the right track when he bagged the boys’ Under15 doubles title with Ong Zhen Yi at the Badminton Asia Under17 and Under15 Junior tournament in Yangon, Myanmar, yesterday.

It was Fazriq’s first international title in the Under15 category.

He also bagged a bronze in the Under15 singles event after losing to eventual champion Riki Takei of Japan 1021, 218, 1421 in the semifinals on Saturday.

The title yesterday was his second at international level after winning the boys’ Under13 doubles title at the Yonze Banthongyord Championships in Bangkok when he was 11 in 2015.

He also did well this year to reach the semifinals of the Under15 singles at the Smiling Fish Satellite tournament in Trang this year.

In the local tournament, Fazriq won the singles Under14 crown at the National Junior Circuit Grand Prix Finals in Kuala Terengganu in July.

“I give myself another three years. I want to play in senior tournaments when I’m 18. My father and uncle (Datuk Jalani Sidek) won the AllEngland doubles title when they were 18 and 19,” said Fazriq.

“I want to try and emulate that.

“I’m happy to win the title with Zheng Yi. Our combination is getting better with every tournament.

“My pet event is the singles but I started my career as a doubles player and went on to win the National Schools (MSSM) doubles title (with Justin Hoh) when I was 11.”

For now, Fazriq just want to play in as many tournaments as possible.

“It’ll give me valuable experience. I’m also going all out to win junior ranking points,” added the Form One student of Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS).
