Green drive eyes RM180bil revenue
Ongkili: Plan will create 200,000 jobs
KUALA LUMPUR: The Green Technology Master Plan 2017 is expected to create 200,000 jobs and generate revenue of RM180bil by 2030.
Energy, Green Technology and Water Minister Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Ongkili said the master plan aims to deliver impactful long-term results that will cement Malaysia’s place as a forerunner in the global green movement.
This is also in line with National Transformation 2050 aspirations, he added.
Dr Ongkili also said the master plan would pave the way for a green future by laying the foundations for a wide-ranging socioeconomic shift, while maintaining sustainability.
“This is why my ministry is seeking RM1bil over the next five years to implement the plan, which will lay the foundation for initiatives in six major sectors – energy, manufacturing, building, transport, waste and water.
“We hope to build awareness, open market opportunities, develop human capital, and promote R&D as well as commercialisation of green technology,” he told reporters after launching the 8th International Greentech & Eco Products Exhibition and Conference Malaysia here yesterday.
He added that the Government sees Islamic financing of environment-friendly infrastructure development, through green sukuk, as an innovative financial instrument.
Dr Ongkili said Bank Negara, the Securities Commission and the World Bank Group are developing a financial ecosystem to boost such green financing in the country.
“My ministry is working closely with these agencies to enhance the green technology industry using principles of Islamic finance,” he added.
Dr Ongkili said Tadau Energy Sdn Bhd and Quantum Solar Park Semenanjung Sdn Bhd are the first and second entities to be issued green sukuk worth RM250mil and RM1bil, respectively.
