KUALA LUMPUR: The opening of the new Naval Region 2 Headquarters in Sandakan, Sabah, will increase security confidence among the maritime community especially fishermen operating along the east coast of the state, says Navy Admiral Tan Sri Ahmad Kamarulzaman Ahmad Badaruddin.

“We cannot remain complacent and must always be proactive in protecting the maritime community in the area,” he told reporters after a pinning of ranks ceremony at KD Sri Gombak, here yesterday.

He said the presence of the headquarters, also known as (Mawilla 2), could also contribute to social and economic development in the area.

He said the new base will be gradually developed and the navy also plans to increase its patrols there to maintain a visible deterrent.

He added that the construction of the base covered several aspects including infrastructure development and increase in the navy manpower and assets.

Mawilla 2 previously based in Kota Kinabalu was moved to Sandakan Navy Base which began operating on Aug 30. The inauguration of Mawilla 2 was officiated by Sabah Chief Minister Tan Sri Musa Aman on Tuesday.
