Mixed day for Ee Wei at world junior meet
PETALING JAYA: There was joy and despair for Toh Ee Wei at the World Junior Championships in Yogjakarta.
The 17-year-old Ee Wei stormed into the mixed doubles quarter-finals with Ng Eng Cheong but fell in the girls’ doubles with Pearly Tan Koong Le at the Among Rogo Stadium yesterday.
Ninth seed Ee Wei-Eng Cheong stunned the seventh seed Ruttanapak OupthongChasinee Korepap of Thailand 21-17, 21-18 in the fourth round to set up a meeting against Indonesia’s Rehan Naufal Kusharjanto-Siti Fadia Silva Ramadhanti.
In the girls’ doubles, Ee Wei ran out of gas after a promising start before going down 21-19, 10-21, 15-21 to China’s Xia YutingZhang Shuxian.
“It’s unfortunate that I couldn’t make it to both quarter-finals.
“I hope to go all the way with Eng Cheong. It’ll be tough against the third seeded Indonesians but we’ll go for an upset.
“I want to do better than my last outing (Bilbao, Spain),” said Ee Wei, who won a bronze medal with Chen Tang Jie.
Leong Jun Hao, Goh Jin Wei and Man Wei Chong-Kwek Yee Jian made it to the quarter-finals in the boys’ singles, girls’ singles and boys’ doubles respectively.
Jun Hao will take on France’s Christo Popov while Jin Wei will face off against Thailand’s Chananchida Jucharoen.
Wei Chong-Yee Jian have a tricky match against Japan’s Mahiro Kaneko-Yonosuke Kubota.
