Runaway woman returns from Indonesia with baby boy in tow
SEPANG: Two agonising years after her daughter eloped with an Indonesian man, a mother is finally reunited with her child.
An emotionally charged reunion was played out at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2’s arrival hall as Normah Yusof, 51, embraced 24-year-old Nurul Farhana.
The fourth of five siblings went missing from her family home in Sungai Besar in 2015 following a “family conflict”.
The family had not heard from her since, even when Nurul’s father died in September last year.
Last month, Normah received an unexpected call from Nurul, who said she was in Medan, Indonesia, and wanted to come home.
“I was surprised but grateful to hear from my daughter after so long,” Normah said.
“However, I told her it would be difficult for me to arrange for her to come back as I could not afford to pay her travel cost.”
She then approached Sungai Besar MP Budiman Mohd Zohdi, who helped Nurul return to Malaysia.
“I knew it was not going to be easy as it involved two countries,” said Budiman.
“However, with the help of an Indonesian NGO, our Government and the consulate in Medan, we made it happen.
“The NGO helped us communicate with the family of Nurul’s Indonesian partner and they eventually relented,” said Budiman.
Nurul has a one-year-old boy with her partner, who accompanied her back to Malaysia.
“For me, she is still my daughter. It does not matter if she married her partner or not,” said Normah.
“Whatever is in the past will remain in the past. I want to move on and I’m happy that my daughter is back with me.”
An emotional Nurul could only muster a few words, saying that she was grateful to be back home.
“I just want to put this sad episode behind me,” Nurul said.
Budiman said he would help the family sort out the documentation for Nurul’s child.
Whatever is in the past will remain in the past. I want to move on and I’m happy that my daughter is back with me.
