Gavin spirals out of contention in CJ Cup

-

KUALA LUMPUR: Gavin Kyle Green (pic) had a day to forget after shooting a disastrous second round 10-over 82 to rule himself out of contention of the CJ Cup in Jeju Island, South Korea.

The 23-year-old, who started yesterday’s opening round tied at second place and three shots off the lead, dropped 10 strokes in his first 12 holes no thanks to five double bogeys on the fourth, fifth, sixth, 11th and 12th.

He then traded two birdies against two bogeys over the last four holes to slip to joint 64th on four-over 148 total.

Gavin is 13 shots behind pace-setter American Luke List, who shot a 67 at the halfway stage at five-under 135.

Fortunately, the tournament is a no-cut event, which means all 78 players will see action in the weekend and there’s every chance for Gavin to salvage something out of it.

At the Macau Open, Arie Irawan Fauzi stayed on course for his second top 10 finish on the Asian Tour when he carded a one-under 70 to be tied seventh on three-under 139 overall after the second round.

Danny Chia failed to build on his opening 69 as he only managed a 74 to drop to joint 39th spot on 143, two strokes ahead of Nicholas Fung who registered a 73 to survive the cut by just a shot in tied 59th.

Ben Leong, who finished tied 24th last year, failed to progress after carding a successive 75 to finish joint 103th.

India’s Gaganjeet Bhullar fired a six-under 65 to lead the tournament by four strokes on 13-under 129.
